Cromwell College music pupils have had the chance to extend their skills thanks to the New Zealand Music Commission.
Musician and producer Jazmine Mary spent two days at the college last week helping pupils develop their songwriting and composition as well as music technology.
Music had a key role to play, Mary said.
‘‘It’s the backbone of human existence, isn’t it? Music and creativity is how we exist . . . I think it’s really important to have roles such as artists in schools to show how important those roles are and how there are so many ways to do music in the world.
‘‘We don’t watch a Netflix show without hearing the music in the background or go to a sports event without entertainment or radio.’’
